The Sakhu Children’s Village is a program that emphasizes holistic healing and the creative arts.
This summer there will be an academic enrichment component as well as lots of outdoor activities and field trips.
Each day is divided between academic enrichment and either the arts or wellness classes. Our strategy for empowering our community is to put the technology of holistic healing into the hands of the children, while providing instruction in the creative arts.
Healing Arts: The children at Sakhu will learn about several holistic healing modalities that have been in existence for thousands of years. They will also experience the healing benefits of these methods. Holistic healing methods put the body and spirit back in balance, awakening the body’s inner resources to heal itself. This process jump-starts all of the child’s faculties so that they can achieve their potential. Their natural sense of joy and clarity begins to emerge. Such a model, a holistic academy and treatment center for children, simply cannot be found anywhere.
*Herbal Medicine *Aromatherapy *Acupuncture (no needles!) *Reiki *Meditation *Yoga
*Tai Chi *Self Defense *Chi Gong *Flower Essences *Homeopathy
Creative Arts & Culture: Art is the natural language of children, and they can learn to use it as a form of liberation. The drum, dance, and all of the art forms have always been used for healing and transformation. Our teaching methods use creative expression as a means for the children to find themselves; connecting them with their deepest essence. Once liberated, once clear in their identity, they are empowered to achieve their goals. Throughout the year, the children will also be exposed to the current gems in our community at various cultural events. As a result, they will be in a position to replicate the rich history that is their legacy.
Our goal is to replicate this unique model across the city, and ultimately nationwide, to transform communities across the country. Our model of providing a well-rounded, holistic treatment and training program for children is unprecedented. To take children, and both treat and teach them these methods, as a group, is a radical step in providing skills and improving the wellness of a community. It is simply not being done anywhere. Yet it may well become a model to help to transform communities across the country.

During her eight-year tenure within the foster care system, Dr. Spooner honed her skills in addressing the issues faced by our children. As Director of Mental Health for a citywide foster care agency, she was charged with improving the wellbeing of over 600 children through the coordination of services. The foster care system includes families who are facing extreme poverty and some of the most intense crises imaginable. With an extremely limited budget, she was charged with finding solutions to help bring these families out of crisis. In addition, the outpatient clinics and hospitals she worked in served similar communities. Thus, for two decades, she has provided hands on psychotherapy, the supervision of other clinicians, as well as the coordination of services in various inner-city districts. She also piloted the Sakhu children’s program from July 2007-June 2008. During this year she was able to observe and improve on this model.
